About the Play
The play's setting is a shamshaam ghat where four man have come to perform the last rites of a girl. While the girl burns on her funeral pyre, the four men drink whiskey and play cards. In the process, they also narrate their love stories. Slowly, the love-life of all the men is unearthed, barring one, who is too reticent to speak. Towards the end, this man acknowledges his love for the girl who is burning.......... In a stunning climax, the burning girl shrieks for her beloved calling him to take him out from the funeral pyre.............
About the Author
Badal Sarkar (1925-): An engineer by profession, he is a leading theatre personality from Bengal who rose into prominence with the'70s wave of street theatre, Badal Sarkar revolutionised Bengalitheatre with his angst-ridden, anti-establishment plays during the Naxalitemovement in a city ridden by traumatic upheavals. Even today, his playsattract large audiences in Calcutta and Bengal. Not only does his workrevolve around larger social issues, involving the masses, but he alsotravels in and around Bengal and takes up issues specific to a particularcommunity or locality and creates plays on the spot. He is also known forpicking up ordinary people from ordinary life, who he feels, suit aparticular role and gets them to act for his skits and plays. He has written about 50 plays of which Evam Indrajit and Basi Khabar (Stale News) are famous. Both these plays belong to the Theatre of the Absurd.manner. Apart fromt this, he has also authored famous plays like Baki Itihas, Pagla Ghoda, Spartacus, Prastava and Juloos, which became trend-setters in the contemporary Bengali Theatre.
We staged PAGLA GHODA in OPEN IIT Hindia Drama competition (1997-98)
at IIT Kharagpur. The play bagged the " SECOND BEST PLAY" award, Karuna
Prasad, the only female cast, won the best actor/actress award and Krishnan
won the best supporting actor/actress award. The play was directed by "yours
truly" who won the "BEST DIRECTOR" award. The lead players were Karuna
Prasad, Krishnan, Narendra Singhal, Pradish Mathews, and Gaurav Kathuria.
