About the Play
Avinash is the story of not Avinash, but her wife who fights all odds to continue her battle with life. Her limping leg leads to rejection by hundreds of possible suitors. Circumstances force her to marry Avinash, a non-descript entity, unworthy of any note and who eventually commits suicide. But she seeks her goals through her child; a child who is the result of her only moment of bliss in an otherwise dull and decaying married life.About the Author
Not everyone who meets Shanta Gokhale is aware of her prodigious talent and achievements in literature, theatre and music. A picture of grace and dignity, the unassuming Shanta has been a teacher, a public relations executive, a writer and a translator. Her novel ‘Rita Welingkar’ won the V.S. Khandekar award for the best novel. Shanta was the Arts Editor with The Times Of India from 1988 to 1993 and sub-editor of the Femina magazine. She has to her credit several features write-ups, short stories and a play, ‘Avinash’, which was translated into Hindi and English from the original Marathi. She has scripted many award-winning documentary films and a feature film directed by Arun Khopkar. Shanta Gokhale’s latest book, ‘Playwright at the Centre’ on contemporary Marathi Theatre has been highly acclaimed as a milestone. Here she evaluates Mumbai’s cultural context in her usual forthright manner.
